Keep in Touch on Facebook
Facebook pages today are everywhere. They are advertised on news stations, TV channels, commercials, and in magazines. it has left its fingerprints all over the media and throughout society.
It started back in February 2004. At first it was only limited to local Boston colleges and universities. By July 2010, it had reached over 500 million active users worldwide in just six short years.
It was designed by Mark Zuckerberg, a computer science sophomore at Harvard. Zuckerberg and his roommates and fellow computer science classmates, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes collaborated on the joint effort in creating the world’s famous social networking site.
It’s usage popularity caught on and spread like wildfire. It quickly surpassed other social networking sites, like MySpace, out of the water. it’s features and capabilities, networking wise, were more effective than MySpace because of the vast social networking web that is created.
One of the reasons more people caught on to it more than MySpace was that MySpace received poor publicity because it was said to attract male predators who preyed after young teenagers. There were several cases and news reports of male predators stalking and trying to meet up with young teenagers they met online. For a few years, MySpace was labeled as dangerous and unsafe.
One reason why it became more successful than MySpace is the business world really caught on to it. All kinds of businesses, organizations, stores, and even schools can be found on it. Even news stations and TV shows will tell their audiences to “Find Us on it”. This is what made it so huge.
Another feature is the ability to “friend” other users. When creating a personal profile, you can fill in the fields with information on where you work, your school, your hometown, and where you even went to school. Each time you log in, it will suggest “people you may know” based on the organizations you are associated with and have filled in your fields.
With these features, it and other social networking sites have made our society and world closer and opened communication immensely. The networking abilities alone have impacted our society in the way that we function and communicate. It helps us keep in touch with friends and family and old schoolmates. It helps us form relationships, contacts, and groups. Keep in touch on it.
